July 6 - St. Catharine's

Niagara Falls

The Sky Screamer at Marineland

Marine life at Marineland

by Garry Dart, Nathan Wilson and Aria Birmingham

Today we had lots of fun. We left the hotel gathering point for a not-so-short trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake, and then headed for the Falls. Once there, we, along with a few other choristers, rode the Maid of the Mist to tour Niagara Falls. It was great fun and we had good spots up front, but it was VERY wet. It felt almost like a bucket of water being poured over your head. We were glad to have our ponchos!

Afterwards we travelled to Marineland. Many people were disappointed because, although the name implies it, there are NO WATER RIDES AT MARINELAND! We ended up having an amazing time, mostly because of a roller coaster named Sky Screamer. Dragon Mountain was amazing because it had the most loop-de-loops I've ever seen. Sky Screaner was a "Tower of Terror" type ride but had an amazing view. Unfortunately Garry was reluctant to go on it so he stayed on the ground taking pictures.

This was one of the best days we've had so far and we can't wait for tomorrow.

Young singers shine in opera production

The Telegram

I was fortunate to be one of many Newfoundlanders now living in Ottawa who had the opportunity to hear Shallaway sing Stephen Hatfield’s chamber opera “Ann and Seamus,” based on the book by Kevin Major, at the National Arts Centre on Monday, July 2.

For those of us who don’t live at home, our experiences with Shallaway are too few and far between. The performance these young Newfoundland-ers gave on Monday night was simply outstanding.

While the audience numbers were a little low due to the Canada Day long weekend, the energy, enthusiasm and artistry of these talented ambassadors filled the hall.

It is so absolutely refreshing to see the proud, confident and intelligent youth of our province taking our culture and our history to Canada.

Perhaps the greatest compliment that can be given to Shallaway was the impromptu signing of the Ode to Newfoundland at the end of the evening. Regardless of ancestry, all of Southam Hall was taken in by the outbreak of nationalism emanating from the pride of hearing the voices of our future.

Well done, Shallaway!
